We are in the midst of a profound change. For decades, most of us lived in a world of relative stability. The systems may not have been perfect, but the rules were clear and the paths laid out. Now that stability has given way to a new normal - one defined by the 3Us of uncertainty, the unstable, and the unknown.
The problem is that we are still trying to navigate as if we were in the old world. Most of us were taught to build our sense of security from the outside in: if I have the job, the salary, the home, the status - then I will feel safe. But when the outside is unstable, that whole foundation is rocky and starts to collapse. Which is why we cannot keep relying on it in the same way.
We need to flip the script.
Security now has to come from the inside out: from our sense of purpose, our identity, and our belief in what is possible for us. That is the shift that we are needing to make. From waiting for certainty to return, to resourcing ourselves to move through this uncertainty with awareness, choice and alignment. Harnessing our own capacity to create and chart our own true course through this chaotic uncertain reality - that is now our new normal.
It is a bit like skiing. On-piste, the tracks are laid out and the rules are clear. Off-piste, the terrain is uncharted, shifting and unpredictable. You cannot just point your skis downhill and hope for the best. You have to rely on your own innate sense, your responsiveness, your ability to meet whatever comes. You choose how you get down that mountain - by trusting in your own unique way and laying the tracks that become your own.
That is where we are now: collectively off-piste, with no existing map to follow - apart from the one that we choose. Together looking at the new blank page that is waiting to be written by each one of us.
And that means that the rules of “business as usual” no longer apply. The work of this moment is to stop waiting for stability to return. And to start building the inner resources that allow us to navigate this profound transition as our new normal. To retrieve our innate agency. And out of the uncertainty, to create what we want to see next.
We are all being faced with an unprecedented level of change. Dealing with that is not easy. In this episode we explore how in the face of uncertainty, grasping externally for control won’t help us. And that what will, is to turn inwards and to create what is true for us from there.
